Family Session Prep Guide

Congrats on booking your family session! I’m excited to work with you and your loved ones. To help you get ready, here’s a guide to make the process as smooth and fun as possible. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions along the way—I’m here to help!

Wardrobe Tips:

Choosing what to wear can feel overwhelming, but don’t stress! Here’s how to approach it:

  • Start with one item: Begin with something you love (like Mom’s dress or a favorite shirt) and build your outfits from there. You don’t have to start with Mom’s outfit—just pick any piece you adore and build the rest of the look around it.
  • Think about your home: These photos will hang on your walls, so consider the colors in your home or what tones you love.
  • Comfort is key: We’ll be active during the session—moving, playing, and exploring. Choose clothes that are comfortable, breathable, and allow for easy movement.
  • Textures and layers: Incorporate layers (like denim jackets, cardigans, scarves) and different textures (chunky knits, lace, etc.) for visual interest.
  • Choose flattering colors: Stick with earthy, muted tones like mustard, mauve, khaki, dark blue, or hunter green. These colors complement each other beautifully.
  • Add accessories: Hats, scarves, jewelry, or headbands can add a personal touch and bring variety to your photos.

Things to Avoid:

  • Big logos: Avoid clothing with large logos that might distract from your family’s faces.
  • Neon colors: Bright neon shades like hot pink or lime green can be overpowering and distracting.
  • Too much matching: Matching outfits are cute, but it’s important to add variety in color, pattern, and texture. Different styles help create dynamic, interesting photos.

What to Expect:

My goal is to capture your family as you truly are—playful, loving, and connected. Here’s what the session will be like:

  • Moments, not just poses: While we’ll start with a few posed photos for the traditional “Christmas card” look, most of the session will be about capturing natural moments. We’ll play, explore, and enjoy each other’s company.
  • Timing: I recommend scheduling the session about an hour before sunset, which gives us that beautiful golden hour light. Most sessions last about an hour, but it can vary depending on your family’s energy!
  • Location: If you have a favorite spot in mind, I’d love to go there! Whether it’s a park, beach, or a spot that holds special meaning to your family, let me know. I love discovering new locations with families.

Preparing the Family:

Here’s how to get everyone ready for the session:

  • For kids: Talk to them about the session in the days leading up to it. Let them know it’s going to be fun! If they’re nervous, maybe promise a treat afterward, like an ice cream date. The more relaxed they are, the more natural their expressions will be.
  • For Dad: Let him know we’re going to have fun and that all he needs to do is relax and enjoy the time with the family. The less pressure, the better!
  • For Mom: Take some time for yourself! Whether it’s getting your hair or nails done, or just enjoying a moment of calm before the session, remember—this is about enjoying your family and having fun together. Don’t stress about perfection!

Session Day:

The day has arrived! Here’s what to keep in mind:

  • Relax and enjoy: The key to great photos is having fun. If someone (especially the kids!) isn’t quite in the mood, that’s okay! I embrace all the different moods and personalities. Just focus on connecting with your family and enjoying the time together.
  • Poses and candid moments: We’ll start with a few posed shots—think of these as the “looking at the camera” moments for holiday cards. After that, we’ll move to more candid, natural interactions.
  • Keep touching: Whether it’s a hug, holding hands, or just sitting close, make sure to stay physically connected. These moments of touch show love and warmth.
  • Snacks and extras: Bring snacks, water, and anything that might make the session more comfortable—blankets if it’s chilly, extra clothes in case of spills or dirt, and, of course, more snacks. It’s all about keeping the vibe relaxed and fun.

The most important thing is to have fun and be yourselves! I’m so excited to capture these special memories for your family. Let’s make it a session to remember!
